HONORARY FELLOWSHIP IN THE
AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS
IS AWARDED TO FIVE PROMINENT SURGEONS

CHICAGO—Honorary Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons was awarded  to five prominent surgeons from Japan, United Kingdom, Sweden, Argentina, and Nigeria last night during Convocation ceremonies that preceded the official opening of the College’s annual Clinical Congress.  The granting of Honorary Fellowship was one of the highlights of the Clinical Congress—one of the largest international meetings of surgeons in the world. 

The recipients were as follows:

-Masaki Kitajima, MD, FACS, FRCS(Hon), FASA (Hon).

Dr. Kitajima is president of International University of Health and Welfare’s Mita Hospital, Tokyo, JAPAN.

-Sir Bruce Edward Keogh, KBE, BSc, MD, FRCS, FESC, FETCS.

Professor Sir Keogh is medical director of the National Health Service, London; professor of cardiac surgery, University College, London; and director of surgery, The Heart Hospital, London, UNITED KINGDOM.

-Ingemar Ihse, MD, PhD, FRCS.

Dr. Ihse is Emeritus Professor of Surgery, Lund University, and director of practicum, Lund Clinical Skills Centre, Lund, SWEDEN.

-Vicente P. Gutierrez, MD, MAAC, FACS.

Dr. Gutierrez is a consultant for Hospital de Clínicas, Buenos Aires, and Professor Emérito, Universidad de Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA.

-Adelola Adeloye, MB, MS, FRCP (Edin), FRCS (Eng), FACS, FICS, FWACS, FMCS (Nig), FAS, FCOSECA.
Professor Adeloye is professor of neurological surgery, University College Hospital, Ibadan, NIGERIA.

Presenting the Honorary Fellowships on behalf of the College were:  Thomas R. Russell, MD, FACS, Chicago, IL; Timothy J. Gardner, MD, FACS, Newark, DE; Richard A. Prinz, MD, FACS, Chicago, IL; Carlos A. Pellegrini, MD, FACS, Seattle, WA; and Edward R. Laws, MD, FACS, Boston, MA. 

Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons is awarded during the ceremonies to surgeons whose education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and  ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation and have been found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the College.  During the College’s Convocation ceremonies this year, 1,259 surgeons from around the world were admitted into Fellowship.  With a membership of more than 75,000, the College is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.

Sir Rickman Godlee, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, was awarded the first Honorary Fellowship in the College during the College’s first Convocation in 1913.  Since then, 418 internationally prominent surgeons, including the five chosen this year, have been named Honorary Fellows of the American College of Surgeons.
