The 5th Annual Meeting of the Consortium of ACS-accredited Education Institutes (AEIs) was held March 16-17, 2012, at the SwissĂ´tel in Chicago. There were 173 registered attendees, with representatives from 53 of the 65 AEIs and 11 exhibiting companies. Attendees came from the United States, Canada, France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Feedback from the meeting has been overwhelmingly positive, with an overall rating from attendees of 4.5 (with 5 being “Excellent” and 4 being “Very Good”).
Presentations were made by a diverse group of speakers, ranging from medical students to research fellows, to program administrators and directors. George Thibault, MD, President of the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation, delivered the keynote address on “Challenges in Health Professional Education,” which was extremely wellreceived. The keynote address was followed by a special panel on interprofessional and multi-disciplinary education at AEIs. Other highlights included 12 original paper presentations, a panel on best practices (focusing on program and faculty development, evaluation, and remediation of practice), hands-on workshops, and a panel featuring speakers from other high-stakes professions that employ simulation training (submarine operations, nuclear power operations, and the Federal Aviation Administration).
Attendees commented that the meeting has been better every year, with superb presentations, networking opportunities, and valuable take-home lessons. Many attendees indicated that they would implement new ideas and make changes based on what they learned, with particular focus on interprofessional education, remediation of practice, and improved curriculum development and assessment.
