Residents as Teachers and Leaders Course
April 13-15, 2012
Wyndham Hotel Chicago, Chicago, IL
Surgical residents are expected to master a broad expanse of clinical and basic science knowledge as well operative skills. Although residency programs tailor their educational programs to meet these needs well, residents are also expected to master a number of critical non-clinical skills, including leading teams and teaching. However, very few residency programs are able to offer opportunities for residents to become proficient in these areas. The Division of Education of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the ACS Resident and Associate Society have worked together to develop a course to address this need.
Course Description
The goal of this course is to help mid- to senior-level surgery residents develop some of the essential non-clinical skills that will be critical to their success as senior level residents and practicing surgeons. The course specifically addresses the skills necessary to be more effective teachers and more successful leaders. The number of participants is limited to 80 attendees to allow ample interaction with faculty, and the course schedule is designed to allow networking with other course participants. The course is designed for mid to senior level surgery residents, but all are welcome to attend.
Course Content
The course will address the following essential skills for residents’ lifelong roles as teachers, leaders, and practicing surgeons:
