Program for Verification of Surgical Knowledge and Skills

Welcome to the Program for Verification of Surgical Knowledge & Skills

The Program for Verification of Surgical Knowledge & Skills (Program for Verification) is housed within the Division of Education and is responsible for 1) the development and implementation of the 5-level model of verification, 2) the verification and maintenance of individual continuing medical education (CME) credit, and 3) the coordination of surgical skills courses.

The American College of Surgeons Board of Regents formally approved the implementation of a 5-level Program for Verification of Surgical Knowledge and Skills in 2005 for physicians participating in educational offerings at the College. The model provides a framework for designing and implementing educational courses based on principles of contemporary surgical education.  Moreover, the model permits provision of appropriate documentation of participants’ knowledge and skills.

The verification and maintenance of individual CME credit records.

The coordination of skills-oriented courses under the purview of the Program for Verification ensures that skills courses offered by the ACS meet the ACCME criteria for accreditation and meet the rigors of the verification level requirements. See level requirements for details.
